As an attorney in Durango for decades, I have represented landowners and developers for many large-scale commercial and residential projects. They include new Mercy Hospital, Twin Buttes, Edgemont Highlands and Edgemont Meadows, Rockridge, SkyRidge, East Animas Village, Dove Ranch, The Meadows, Rio Grande Land, Animas Park for Mobile Homes and others, as well as downtown restaurants and office buildings and rural ranches.
In this capacity, I have protected and enhanced the private property rights of property owners. My experiences with La Plata County have included appearing before and observing the performance of Gwen Lachelt as a member of the La Plata County commissioners.
Without exception, Gwen Lachelt has exhibited fairness and respect for the property rights of individuals and companies and has always been thoughtful, considerate, balanced and dignified in performing as a commissioner.
I believe that the effort to recall Gwen Lachelt is a serious mistake that appears to have sprung from opposition to the early drafts of the new land-use code. I urge everyone not to confuse opposition to the recent code draft with a recall of Gwen Lachelt.
Please do not sign recall petitions, or if you have, please take the time to contact the La Plata County Clerk to have your name removed.
It is the best way to protect property rights in our county.
