Ending season, Bayfield boys go out kicking

Soccer team has a tough season in SWL

Like a typical sports bar televising World Cup action, the Wolverines served up shots aplenty during their 2015 season's last weekend of 3A Southwestern League work on Oct. 16 and 17.

But like any number of snockered soccer spectators seated upon stools, the goals proved elusive.

Sophomore Colton Fine felt like he'd taken "10" tries-two particularly proving promising at the end of each half-versus Ridgway alone in the first leg of the team's final road trip of the season.

And the next morning, undaunted and perhaps even more driven by coming up dry against the Demons to go out scoring against the Miners, the chances were again abundant for Fine, Finlay Marshall, Tilden Berriman, Jack Ferguson and practically any other Bayfielder wanting to put one on frame.

Yet when all was shot and done, the opposing goalkeeper's ledgers were still spotless and a misleading fall for BHS Soccer bottomed out with a well-played 1-0 loss at Ridgway(now 5-7-1, 5-5-1 SWL) and a 4-0 loss at Telluride.

After four first-half corner kicks taken reportedly in succession, Ridgway junior Kikito Meraz finally netted what somehow held up as the lone marker in the battle beneath Ouray County's overcast skies, as both BHS sophomore Chad Winkler and RHS junior Jonathan Zaugg stopped numerous better attempts after intermission.

Seniors Miles Galbo and Peter Hervold each netted once the next day for Telluride (9-3-1, 8-2-1), helping to keep the hungry Wolverines (0-13-1, 0-11-1) at bay long enough to preserve a shutout. It was the last match of their careers for BHS seniors Isaac Baca, Kaden Taulli and Chandler Jackson.

Bayfield's future does look promising, however, with all the aforementioned non-seniors able to return for at least one more season together, along with all three goalies-Winkler, Austin Bushnell (who gave strong minutes and a new midfield dimension to the revamped attack over the weekend) and young Colby Baker, as well as a developing defensive unit, led by sophomores Chris Mooney and Shea Marx.
