Cost will be split between county, U.S. Marshal Service
The lower floor of the La Plata County Courthouse will get a remodel.

An estimated $2 million remodel for the lower floor of the La Plata County Courthouse was approved Tuesday.

The cost of the remodel will be covered by La Plata County and the U.S. Marshal Service, which will pay up to $1,632,067 and $1,020,005, respectively. The courthouse is at 1060 East Second Ave.

La Plata County commissioners unanimously approved the motion Tuesday, which allows for a maximum price for the remodel of $2,089,449.

The U.S. Marshal Service, currently housed in space at Bodo Industrial Park, will rent space from La Plata County at the courthouse in downtown Durango. The rent will generate an annual revenue of $78,189 to the county.

The first floor of the county courthouse was recently remodeled for $5.4 million, with a $1.9 million energy impact assistance grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs and an additional $1.4 million from the U.S. General Services Administration covering the cost.
