Farmers Market: Fiddling Potter creates art and music

Former teacher now fires functional stoneware
Former art teacher Yvonne Holland now sells functional stoneware pottery as the Fiddling Potter Studio. As the name of her studio implies, she also plays Irish fiddle.

After a career educating students in Arizona about art, Yvonne Holland of Durango continues to make it, now selling it as the Fiddling Potter Studio.

“I was an art teacher for 33 years,” Holland said. “I’m a plein air painter and a stoneware, high-fire potter and photographer and fiddler.”

The majority of the items Holland brings to the Durango Farmers Market are functional stoneware dishes and utensils for cooking and eating. The stoneware has been fired up to 2,300 degrees, which makes it very sturdy and oven-, dishwasher- and microwave-proof, she said.

Holland also sells local plein air paintings – meaning they’re painted outdoors – around Durango. According to her website, the beauty of the mountains beckoned her to Durango.

When it comes to music, Holland specializes in Irish fiddling, she said. She can be found playing it every Sunday at the Irish Embassy Pub.
