Five Demons win brackets at Sabercat Slam

Dugan and Belt win titles in A division

The Durango High School boys wrestling team competed at the Sabercat Slam on Saturday at Castle View High School in Castle Rock and had five wrestlers finish first in their divisions.

Competing in the varsity A division, Ryan Dugan picked up a pair of first-period pins against Northfield and Eaglecrest to win the 113-pound class.

Riley Belt also scored a 132-pound title in the A division for DHS, getting falls against wrestlers from Smoky Hill and Eaglecrest to win his bracket.

Dillon Harris (120), Izik Garrett (126) and Braxton Waddell (175) also wrestled in the A division for Durango, but all three finished in fourth.

Three of the six Demons who wrestled in the consolation B division also won their brackets.

Elijah Ponce went 2-0 at 120 to take first, getting pins against Northfield and Legend.

Wyatt Bartel got falls against Eaglecrest and Northfield to finish first at 138.

Brett Franklin also pinned two foes, from Northfield and Smoky Hill, to win his 285-pound bracket.

At 190, JJ Vickers finished second and Dale Harris third while Warren Uptain finished fourth at 215.

The Demons were also scheduled to host a triangular on Thursday. This weekend, DHS will compete in the Butch Melon Classic on Saturday at Ignacio High School.
