Fix homelessness, ignore the experts

I propose the following to address the homelessness and transient problem in Durango:

1. The City should work with liquor stores to identify and refuse sales to the transient and homeless. There already has been, in the last few years, a program among the liquor stores to do this.

2. Pick up cost of one-way bus tickets out of town. This is not a cynical recommendation. Some of these people have jobs or family waiting in other states who can help but they do not have the means/motivation to relocate.

3. The recent study request will recommend multi-millions be spent on housing and treatment programs. Instead, target people on the edge of homelessness by contacting low income employers.

4. Don’t listen to advocacy organizations such as Housing Solutions for the Southwest. These people may be experts, but their paychecks are dependent on the problem.

5. Do not look for reasons to fail – such as applying the letter of the law from a non-controlling jurisdiction.
