The best start in Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse history continued Thursday in Grand Junction, as the Skyhawks beat Division III Albright College (Reading, Pa.) 15-9 for their second consecutive win.
FLC (5-1) scored eight of the game’s first 12 goals en route to an 8-4 lead at halftime.
Marissa DiCecco and Ally Kvidera led the Skyhawks with three goals each, while nine players scored.
“(Thursday), we kind of did what we wanted to do,” FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald said. “Knowing that the team we were playing was a run-and-gun team, we took a lot of time off the possession and capitalized on our opportunities.”
FLC outshot the Lions 29-19 and picked up 25 groundballs compared to 18 by Albright. The Skyhawks caused 10 turnovers in the game and only allowed four free position shots.
Albright controlled 17 of the game’s 25 draws, however.
The Skyhawks will dive back into conference play for their next game, a 1 p.m. clash with No. 13 Lindenwood on Saturday at Ray Dennison Memorial Field on the FLC campus. Lindenwood, last year’s conference champion, is the favorite to win the first year of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
“This is probably going to be a simliar team,” MacDonald said. “They’re a team that wants to score as often as possible. If we’re able to keep more posession than them, we should be OK.”
