Fluoridation: True and false

True: Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral.

False: The fluoride used in Durango is natural. In Durango, we add the toxic, unpurified, industrial waste product from aluminum manufacturing plants in China. It has been proved to contain fluoride, arsenic and lead.

True: Claims for over 75 years that fluoridation is safe were proved false under oath in an epic court ruling.

True: This federal court ruling found that every .23 mg/L of fluoride causes 1 point loss in IQ. We use .7mg/L, which is over 3 points of lost IQ per child from just fluoridated water alone.

True: Water fluoridation presents an unreasonable risk to children’s brains.

True: Fluoride was shown in the 1950s to be effective in reducing cavities.

False: Fluoridation is effective in reducing cavities today. The recent Cochran Scientific Review claimed that because Americans consume multiple sources of fluoride: processed foods and drinks, dental treatments, tea, pharmaceuticals, PFAS and fluoridated toothpaste, the effectiveness of water fluoridation is 0% for adults and less than 4% for children.

True: Children and adults receive well over the 4 mg/L limit set by the EPA as toxic.

True: Naturally occurring fluoride is difficult to absorb.

True: Sodium fluoride used in Durango is a salt, 95% of which is absorbed directly into the body.

False: Residents didn’t ask for change in fluoridation policy from the city.

True: Multiple emails to city officials asked for fluoridation to be stopped immediately.

True: Durango doesn’t need water fluoridation anymore.
