For Wolverines’ boys soccer, it was well worth the wait

Call it a watershed moment for the Bayfield High School boys soccer program.

BHS picked up its first win since Oct. 19, 2012, when it beat Alamosa 4-1 on Saturday at Wolverine Country Stadium.

It was the Wolverines’ largest margin of victory and most goals scored since an 8-1 victory over Center on Oct. 11, 2012.

The victory also marked head coach Dave Foster’s first as a head coach.

“The boys played so well,” the second-year coach said. “They rebounded from a tough loss the previous day, really played smart and came out with a lot of intensity and pride. I think they were pretty embarrassed against the game previous against Durango.”

The DHS junior varsity beat BHS 8-2 on Friday.

BHS (1-3, 1-2 3A Region 5) battled to a 0-0 draw in the first half before the Mean Moose scored in the first two minutes of the second half.

Grant Pierce had an answer. He scored an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute to tie the game.

Colton Fine put the Wolverines ahead in the 59th minute with an assist from Viktor Sandvik, an exchange student who has been injured the last two games.

Sandvik found the back of the net himself in the 84th minute, assisted by Fine.

Pierce scored again in the 80th minute, with an assist from Finlay Marshall.

“We played the way that we expect to play all the time,” said Foster, whose rebuilding project features eight freshmen in his starting lineup. “It was a really good feeling to have these boys come back.”

Dillon Hufnagel started the first half in goal for BHS before exiting at halftime after a 50-50 challenge.

Ben Young played the second half for BHS.

“I was able to use both of my goalies,” Foster said. “I’m so proud of both my boys.”

The Wolverines will go for two consecutive wins for the first time in at least half a decade when they will host Aztec at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Wolverine Country Stadium.

“They know we can compete,” Foster said of his team. “We’ll build off everything we did (Saturday).”
