Fort Lewis College football heads to Black Hills State for first road test

FLC football plays first road game of season at Black Hills State
After one week, Fort Lewis College has the No. 1 run defense in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The Fort Lewis College football team will hit the road for the first time this season, as it traveled to Spearfish, South Dakota, to face Black Hills State.

The meeting with the Yellow Jackets won’t be an easy one for the Skyhawks, who are 1-4 all time and 0-2 on the road against Black Hills State. After a lackluster start to last week’s opener against Adams State, the Yellow Jackets rallied from a 31-3 deficit and earned a 47-41 victory in double overtime.

The Skyhawks (0-1, 0-1 RMAC) will again be tasked with stopping a dangerous running attack. Last week, Fort Lewis held Chadron State, a traditionally run-dominant program, to a mere 92 rushing yards. The Fort Lewis run stuffers will need to be equally as good this week against the Yellow Jackets (1-0, 1-0), who boast the No. 1 rushing offense in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after piling up 293 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns last week in Alamosa.

But it’s not all about the running game for Black Hills State. The team also come into the game with quarterback Ryan Hommel leading the RMAC in total offense with 397 yards after throwing for 327 yards and four touchdowns against Adams State.

In last week’s loss to Chadron State, Fort Lewis showed flashes of dominance on both sides of the ball. The Skyhawks held a 16-0 lead, one touchdown coming after an interception was returned for a touchdown, and controlled the clock with an effective running game behind quarterback Bo Coleman and running back PJ Hall. But a couple big plays from Chadron stole the momentum and the Skyhawks never recovered.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m Saturday.
