Fort Lewis College golf led by Taylor in Arizona

Skyhawks 13th at WNMU Intercollegiate

Consistency isn’t a problem for the Fort Lewis College men’s golf team.

The Skyhawks combined to shoot 295 and 293 in Monday’s two rounds and followed up with a 294 Tuesday at the Western New Mexico University Mustang Intercollegiate at the par-72 Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.

Fort Lewis’ total of 882 was 13th in the 20-team event. Hugh Taylor led the Skyhawks with a 28th-place three-day total of 217 (72, 71, 74). Mitchell Donley and Matt Huntley finished 31st with 218. Tyler Blohm finished 81st with 229, and Eric Neal’s 236 was good for 98th.

“This was a strong field and we held our own,” Fort Lewis head coach Guy Begay said in a news release. “The guys are starting to better capitalize on their opportunities and reduce mistakes. We hope we can keep performing better and better each week.”

BYU-Hawaii came away with the title in the team competition with a total of 852. Medalist honors went to CSU-East Bay’s Adam Stone and Colorado Mines’ George Markham, who finished tied with 206.

Colorado Mines finished third with 856. Colorado Mesa (869), Colorado Christian (873), CSU-Pueblo (873) and UC-Colorado Springs (876) finished eighth through 11th, respectively.

The Skyhawks have a few weeks to prepare for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship, which will be held April 24-25 at Octillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Arizona.
