Fort Lewis College interim head golf coach Jim Foltz was promoted to head coach, the athletic department said Thursday in a news release.
Foltz has held the interim title since early October, when former head coach Guy Begay announced his resignation.
He has signed eight recruits in the time since he took over, four on the men’s side and four on the women’s, including Faith Mewmaw of Animas High School and Madalen Meier of Durango High School. He also brought in former FLC golfer and DHS alum Devin Schreiner as an assistant coach, who golfed for the Skyhawks from 2009-2011.
“Golf has been my passion for over 30 years. The opportunity to mentor student-athletes in the sport I love fulfills a lifelong dream,” Foltz said in the news release. “Coaching is more than just the sport, it is developing young adults to be successful in society. So, I view my role as one to motivate, educate and graduate student-athletes. The motivate, educate and graduate (MEG) comes from my wife Meg, who has been very supportive throughout this process.”
Foltz spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs and was previously at DHS as an assistant head coach for the boys golf team for the 2013-14 seasons.
Outgoing athletic director Barney Hinkle said the program took a step forward with the full-time hire.
“Jim has earned this opportunity. His discipline, leadership and integrity will be a positive influence on our student-athletes as well as Fort Lewis College and the Durango community,” Hinkle said in the release. “With Coach Foltz and Devin Schreiner, our men’s and women’s golf programs are in very capable hands.”
Fort Lewis will travel to Rogers State University for the Hillcat Classic from Sunday-Tuesday in Owasso, Oklahoma.
