Fort Lewis College soccer held scoreless against St. Mary’s

Skyhawks unable to find winner in double-overtime draw

The Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team played its final non-conference game of the season to a double-overtime 0-0 draw on Sunday against St. Mary’s University of Texas in Colorado Springs.

The Skyhawks (2-0-2) were outshot 21-11, but Fort Lewis goalkeeper Peter Byrne made a number of routine saves in the draw.

“I think we created a good amount of good looks, we should’ve gotten at least a goal, but I think the draw was a fair result but they had their fair share of chances as well,” said Fort Lewis College head coach David Oberholtzer. “We defended quite well and have been trying to have that solid defensive shape, so I think we were content with the way it ended up.”

The Skyhawks had four corner kicks on the day, in addition to five shots on goal, two of which came from junior forward Ryan Lee, who notched the winner in Friday’s 3-2 win over St. Edward’s University.

Fort Lewis will now have a week to prepare for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener against Colorado Mesa University.

“After four non-conference games, we’re still unbeaten, but we’re still learning a lot about this group,” Oberholtzer said. “We’ve learned a lot in the last two weeks, and now we’ve got another week ahead of us to prepare for the conference season.”

FLC kicks off against the Mavericks (2-1) at 7 p.m. Friday in Grand Junction, before hosting Adams State University at 1 p.m. Sunday at Dirks Field in the home opener.
