Fort Lewis College women’s soccer tops alumni team

Webster scores two, Patron adds goal in exhibition win

The Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team loves to press. That was evident during Saturday’s 4-0 exhibition win over the women’s alumnae team at Dirks Field.

The Skyhawks pressed up the field from the opening whistle and were able to control most of the possession in the scrimmage. That will be on display again at 12:30 p.m. Friday, as FLC will open the season at home against Angelo State University

Fort Lewis College head coach Damian Clarke said there is a lot of promise with his attacking unit. The side also blanked Adams State University 4-0 in a preseason match last week.

“I think we lacked a bit of energy to start with, and I think that when the other team sits off from you and isn’t pressing the action, there’s a lackadaisical feel to the way we started,” Clarke said. “If you’re not close to the ball, you don’t have the energy and it’s not as fun. We’d like to be a team of pressing the action and forcing the other team to solve the pressure.”

Emma Patron played a role in both Skyhawk goals in the first half, as she scored the opener in the 31st minute. She created space and fired a shot into the right corner of the net to go up 1-0. FLC scored its second eight minutes later, as Patron delivered in a low cross into the box on a corner kick and fellow senior Bailey Webster got her foot to it and tapped it home to make it 2-0.

“I think we’re all super excited and are stoked on our first two preseason games. We beat Adams 4-0, and today’s result was great to see, as well,” Patron said. “We have a lot of players that are healthy from last season, and we’ve got a lot of new players with a lot of energy, so I think we’re going to upset some teams this season just because we’ve been playing well. We’ve got a really good dynamic right now.”

In the second half, Valerie Mestas gave Fort Lewis its third goal, as she hit a one-time volley after a corner kick was partly cleared. The ball fell to Mestas, who calmly volleyed it home to make it 3-0.

With less than 10 minutes remaining, Webster added her second goal, as she received a pass from Natalea Cohen and chipped it over the keeper to make it 4-0.

“Bailey has so much energy and has had a bit of a roller coaster with injuries, but she’s been taking it all with stride, and she scored two very good goals today,” Patron said.

As the first match of the season looms Friday back at Dirks Field, Clarke said there are still some questions concerning substitutions at the attack with several players showing they are capable to play up front.

“We don’t know who the tandems will be, but we feel good about the fact that we’re making progress with figuring out who those players are going to be and how they’re can compliment each other, so we’re closer today than we were yesterday,” he said. “We have a lot to figure out. You can tell that we’re very deep, so our depth is going to create issues for us as coaches to try and make the right choices.”
