Fort Lewis finally adds women’s golf to its clubhouse

Many years ago, right here in this column, I used a paragraph to suggest adding women’s golf as a sanctioned Fort Lewis College program. After that article went to print, I was called aside by the then-FLC athletic director, whose tenure was short-lived, and chastised for even attempting to suggest the inclusion of the aforementioned sport.

Back when I mentioned this, Durango High School had at least two very talented young female golfers who would have given an inaugural program a big jump start. But, as it were, my comments were swept aside. Now, fast-forward to this week, we discover the addition of two new women’s sports, including women’s golf to the FLC competitive landscape. Back then, it was a no-brainer, and today, the same.

I applaud the efforts to include women’s golf. Now, let’s get out there and show the RMAC we are long overdue!

I wanted to drop a note about the 15th annual Bank of the San Juans Charity Golf Tournament, which will be held June 13 at the Dalton Ranch Golf Club. Proceeds from this ever-popular and growing event go to the Community Foundation, serving Southwest Colorado. This is a wonderful tournament, so give Mike Smedley (Bank of the San Juans) a call at 426-7128 or Briggen Wrinkle (Foundation Executive Director) a call at 375-5807 for more information.

Conquistador Golf Club in Cortez will be hosting its annual Guys and Dolls Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Call Micah Rudosky at 565-9208 to see if there are spots still available to play.
