Fort Lewis College has hired a new men’s and women’s cross country and women’s track and field coach.

According to Friday’s Fort Lewis College news release, former Colorado Christian coach Joshua Coon will lead the Skyhawks’ programs beginning in May. Coon was at CCU for four years, but local ties brought him back to Durango. He graduated from FLC in 2007 and his wife, Kaila, is a teacher at Durango High School.

“I’m incredibly excited to coach at a school that has meant so much to me over the years,” Coon said in a the news release. “I’ve had the honor of coaching some excellent athletes over the years at the high school and collegiate level. Thinking about them and their hard work and love for the sport fueled me to get back in.”

Coon competed two years for the Skyhawks men’s cross country team and earned All-RMAC academic honors as a student-athlete at FLC.

He also developed and coached Colorado Christian’s first ever All-American, and his academic performance at FLC transitioned to his team. The women’s 2013-2014 cross country team at CCU had the highest collective grade point average in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

He will fill a long-standing void for the FLC programs as former coach Mark Dutro resigned from the posts in Dec. 2016.

“Coach Dutro did a great job launching the women’s track and field program,” Coon said in the news release. “From what I’ve seen, we have a young and hungry team full of high-character, hardworking student-athletes.”
