It took awhile for the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team to find its rhythm Saturday in the season opener in Pueblo. However, when the Skyhawks saw one shot hit the back of the net, the floodgates opened for the visitors.
Ellie Carpenter and Brooke Galle combined to score seven of the Skyhawks’ 14 goals, as Fort Lewis rolled to a 14-8 season-opening win against CSU-Pueblo.
It took 19 minutes and a 2-0 deficit for the Skyhawks to get it together, as Galle’s first goal of the day started the scoring parade. Carpenter added two more to give the Skyhawks the lead and push what turned into a six-goal run for Fort Lewis.
Nikki Fry’s goal just before halftime gave FLC a 7-3 lead at intermission, but the Mavericks came roaring back. They cut the FLC lead to two at 7-5 and again at 10-8. The Skyhawks outscored the home team 4-0 in the final 7 minutes. Galle scored her second and third goals of the game and Carpenter added her fourth to seal the victory for FLC.
Ryann Pierce scored twice for Fort Lewis, while Marissa DiCecco, Fry, Megan Longtain, Rebecca Miller and Jam Vertner each had a goal in the win.
Fort Lewis will play Adams State at 1 p.m. Sunday in a non-conference game.
