Fruita takes down Durango in softball

Fruita Monument wins 15-0, 13-3

The Wildcats of Fruita Monument High School won a pair of games in a doubleheader against the Durango High School softball team Saturday, winning 15-0 and 13-3.

In the first game, Fruita (10-5, 4-1 4A/5A Southwestern League) took an early lead and kept it going all game, but Durango (3-11, 1-2 SWL) couldn’t get the tough out.

“Cami Bisbee threw a good game and kept batters off balance, but errors hurt the Demons in the field,” Durango head coach Chelsea Rodriguez said in an email to The Durango Herald.

Rebekah Ford went 1-for-2 with a single, and Danica Dudley went a perfect 2-for-2 with a double and single.

In the second game, Durango brought the energy up a little.

“Fruita threw a great pitcher against us, but the girls really stepped up,” Rodriguez said.

In the fourth inning Joie Raybourn and Dudley got Durango going by hitting back-to-back singles. Rachel Piccoli then reached on base on balls and Kylee Shilaikis hit in Durango’s first run with a solid single up left field.

All of the action came in the fifth inning when Durango held Fruita’s bats back and scored some runs. Ford singled to center then moved around the bases off a Raybourn single. After Bisbee singled to load the bases, Ford eventually scored from third base on a Danica Dudley sac fly ball. Lexy Unruh had a clutch single to score Raybourn, but a base running error caused the third out.

Ford went 1-for-3, Raybourn went 2-for-3, Danica Isley went 1-for-2, Shilaikis went 1-for-2 and Unruh also went 1-for-2.

Durango returns home against Montrose for another doubleheader at 10 a.m. Oct. 3 at the Aspen Field on the Fort Lewis College campus.
