Gibbons: The opposite of supporting liberty

Our county is developing a land use code; it has met significant resistance from many people, including the La Plata Liberty Coalition. As a rancher, I share concern about government overreach and I support efforts to minimize the effects of this document.

Unfortunately, the Liberty Coalition has devolved into a right-wing group that falls far outside the scope of land use codes. They claim to be non-partisan, but their social media presence shows a dark side of our political climate. Petty threats and attacking the sexuality of local elected officials have no place in our county.

The coalition attacks LPEA for considering pursuing green energy. Blanket dismissal of investigating renewable energy reveals a founded bias and resistance to common sense. I suggest people look at the coalition’s social media pages and that of their LPEA candidates.

Why does the coalition advocate boycotting all Local First! businesses and others that want to stay out of the recall debate? Why are the founders of the La Plata Liberty Coalition posting incendiary reviews of many local businesses? Encouraging boycotts and actively trolling local business is not a benefit to our county. Boycotting people holding different beliefs is the opposite of supporting liberty.

Rational people like myself want nothing to do with this corruption of our conservative values.
