The “Appoint a Republican” editorial was spot-on (Herald, June 27). To me, it spoke to the true essence of democracy. As a progressive Democrat and a longtime resident of La Plata County, I’ve witnessed the politics of both Republican and Democrat Board of County Commissioners dominance; it can be hard-hearted and demeaning. It doesn’t have to be that way and it shouldn’t.
Your editorial did a great job of outlining the current issues facing the county commission and the need for a broader based consensus.
I know Brad Blake to be a knowledgeable and fair-minded individual. My Republican neighbors like and respect him. His past work on the commission would make Brad an excellent choice for the Democrat selection committee. His appointment would really thrust my La Plata County Democrat party into the limelight giving representative democracy a voice again in our tattered representational democracy.
