The Fort Lewis College indoor track and field team competed last weekend at the Adams State Qualifier for the first time since Dec. 7. Hannah Hartwell, Brody Hubbard and Treyton Schaapherder led the Skyhawks with second-place finishes.
FLC’s men’s and women’s indoor track teams competed against runners from Adams State, Colorado Mesa and Trinidad State.
Schaapherder, a freshman from Clarinda, Iowa, led the men’s team with a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter race in nine minutes and 16.97 seconds.
“The men were solid,” FLC head coach Dalton Graham said. “It was just a mile and then 3K on the distance side of things and we had some really good performances. Some of those races are people's first race since maybe conference weekend of cross country so I know some of those people have been off for two or three months.”
Hubbard, a freshman from Toledo, Ohio, ran a 4:28.50 for the mile to finish second. Graduate student Aaron Busche finished third in 4:32.90.
Behind Schaapherder was junior Skyler McIntyre in third in the 3,000 in 9:17.93.
Skyhawks wide receiver Zachary Gaumont is sprinting on the track instead of into the end zone for FLC. The sophomore finished third in the men’s 60 sprint in 6.92. Freshman Dante Solopaw finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.80.
On the women’s side, a familiar face in senior Hannah Hartwell led the women with a second-place finish in the 3,000 in 10:34.57.
“It was a good rust-buster for us,” FLC associate head coach Gracen Key said. “A lot of those women had not raced in anywhere from 6-12 weeks or so … some of them hadn't even raced on a track since last track season. So, it was good to just get out there and really just use it more for a training piece than anything else.”
Junior Marisol Castilleja finished fifth in the mile in 5:45.83.
The Skyhawks track and field teams travel to Albuquerque next weekend to compete in the New Mexico Team Open at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Friday and Saturday.
