Mercy to offer free education fair Friday

Mercy Regional Medical Center will offer a free Education Fair from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday in conference rooms C and D on the garden level, 1010 Three Springs Blvd.

The fair is for anyone interested in exploring opportunities to advance their careers.

Representatives from six area colleges and universities will be available to discuss educational opportunities for people interested in pursuing nursing and non-nursing careers.

Participating schools are: American Sentinel University, Colorado Mesa University, Chamberlain College of Nursing, Grand Canyon University, Southwest Colorado Community College, University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and University of Colorado-Denver.

Doctor to discuss Parkinson’s at Mercy

Neurosurgeon Dr. David VanSickle of the Denver Deep Brain Stimulation Center will give a presentation called “Parkinson’s Disease and Essential Tremor” at noon Monday at Mercy Regional Medical Center, Conference Room A, 1010 Three Springs Blvd.

VanSickle will discuss who is susceptible to Parkison’s, symptoms of the disease and the best treatment options. The presentation is free.

Exceptional nurses honored with awards

The Southwestern Colorado Area Health Education Center presented its awards honoring exceptional nurses in the region.

Jennifer Adams, a second-year nursing student at Southwest Colorado Community College, received the nursing scholarship award.

Katelyn Bach and Roxanne Hupp were named “Nightingale Luminaries.” They attended the statewide award ceremony in Denver.

Bach has worked at Mercy Regional Medical Center for the past two years and was nominated in the area of leadership. Hupp, a nurse at Mercy since 2000, was nominated in the advocacy category.

Registered nurses Roberto Baca and Laverne Page, seasoned nurses with more than 15 years of experience, received the Shining Star Nursing Award. Other nominees honored include Robyn Bragg, Agnes Eytchison, Judy Williams, Elizabeth Hamilton and Judy Jarvis.

Erin McMahon was presented the Rising Star Award, which recognizes a nurse currently working in Southwest Colorado who has 10 years or less experience and shows leadership and growth potential.

Other Four Corners nurses nominated for the Rising Star Award are Sara Ballantyne and Danielle Patton.
