Community invited to honor nurses

The community is invited to attend the National Nurses Week Champagne Celebration at 7 p.m. May 5 in The Pullman Room at The Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.

The Southwestern Colorado Area Health Education Center will host the event. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased by Monday. RSVP and register online at http://bit.ly/1XWnLFu.

This annual awards event acknowledges the achievements of nurses in Southwest Colorado and is a fundraiser for the annual Nightingale Community Nursing Scholarship for a second-year nursing student.

The event will acknowledge two local nurses who have been nominated as “Nightingale Luminaries.” Nurses Katelyn Bach and Roxanne Hupp have been selected to attend a statewide award gala to be held in Denver on May 7. Bach has worked at Mercy Regional Medical Center for the past two years and has been nominated in the area of leadership. Hupp, a nurse at Mercy since 2000, has been nominated for recognition in advocacy.

Free class at Mercy to address prediabetes

Mercy Regional Medical Center will offer a free class for people diagnosed with prediabetes from 9 to 11 a.m. May 6 in Suite 140 of Mercy’s medical office building.

Sheena Carswell and Marge Morris will teach the class. Attendees will learn how to manage prediabetes and prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes. To register, call 764-3415.

Heart Safe LaPlata offers CPR classes

Heart Safe LaPlata, a local nonprofit organization, will offer these classes:

Adult CPR/AED class from 6 to 10 p.m. May 5.CPR Pro class from 6 to 10 p.m. May 12.Both classes will be held at the Durango Fire & Rescue Station 1, 142 Sheppard Drive in Bodo Park.
