Event to support moms’ mental health

A “Climb Out of the Darkness” event will be held in Durango to raise awareness about maternal mental illnesses such as postpartum depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and psychosis at 10 a.m. June 14 on the Animas Mountain Trail.

The event also will raise money for Postpartum Progress, a nonprofit organization and online community of support resources for women around the world.

Animas Brewing Co. will donate a free pint of beer to each of the first 25 members to register. Beer tickets will be distributed on the day of the climb.

Here’s your chance to meet pet therapists

San Juan Regional Medical Center will hold “Meet a Pet Therapist” at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Healing Garden across from Café LaVentanna, 801 West Maple St., in Farmington.

The community is invited to learn about how the pet-therapy program affects patients’ lives.

Attendees will meet pet therapists and therapy dogs, hear from people who have benefited from the program and have the chance to take part in a prize drawing. Refreshments will be served.

Centura Health helps veterans

Health Net Federal Services and Centura Health have signed an agreement to provide veterans with enhanced access to high-value medical care through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Patient-Centered Community Care and Veterans Choice programs.

Under the patient-centered program, eligible veterans have access to community-based primary care, inpatient specialty care, outpatient specialty care, mental-health care, limited emergency care and limited newborn care for female veterans after the birth of a child.

Mercy earns award for patient experience

Mercy Regional Medical Center earned the Healthgrades 2015 Outstanding Patient Experience Award.

Mercy was identified as providing outstanding performance in the delivery of a positive experience for patients during their hospital stay, according to Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

Healthgrades evaluated hospitals on issues from cleanliness and noise levels in patient rooms to factors such as pain management and responsiveness to patients’ needs.

Mercy’s performance places it among the top 15 percent of hospitals in the nation, according to Healthgrades.

Advance directives to be discussed

In recognition of National Healthcare Decisions Day, Mercy Regional Medical Center will offer a free information session about advance directives from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday in conference room D in the garden level at Mercy.

Mercy’s Director of Physician Services Dr. Kip Boyd will speak about the importance of advance care planning and how to establish advance directives, including medical power of attorney and living wills, as well as designating a health-care decision-maker and end-of-life care wishes.

Endoscopy center receives recognition

The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy has renewed its recognition of the Southwest Endoscopy Center through its Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program.

Southwest Endoscopy is the only facility in Southwest Colorado to have received this designation.

The recognition program honors centers that have demonstrated a commitment to patient safety through rigorous criteria focused on quality assurance, endoscope reprocessing, CDC infection control guidelines and staff competency.

Chiropractor attends NFL Combine

Dr. Dan McClure of Lightning Bolt Chiropractic in Bayfield has returned from the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

McClure was the keynote speaker for the Professional Football Chiropractic Society’s annual convention. He spoke about the evaluation and treatment of extremity injuries.

McClure evaluated and treated several members of the NFL while there. McClure works with NFL’s Players Association and maintains an active practice in Bayfield.
