Durango’s own Missy Rodey named Health Hero

Missy Rodey has been honored as the 2015 Health Hero by the Community Health Action Coalition.

Rodey has been involved with the coalition since its inception in 2001. The coalition’s Health Heros embody the spirit of the coalition’s vision of better health for all.

During her involvement with the coalition, some of her contributions include co-leading the Health Service District Campaign for two years, serving on the Primary Health Care Community Coalition, serving on the Health Services Steering Committee, serving as chairwoman of the coalition’s board of directors, writing grants and supporting the coalition’s staff members and board.

Beyond the coalition, Rodey has served on Mercy Regional Medical Center’s board of directors since 2007, including three years as chairwoman. She was the director of the Early Childhood Health Integration grant at the Early Childhood Council and executive director of the United Way of Southwest Colorado.

Prediabetes class available this Friday at Mercy

Mercy Regional Medical Center will offer free education to people with prediabetes from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday in Suite 140 of the medical office building at Mercy.

People diagnosed with prediabetes are at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Effectively managing this condition can help prevent diabetes.

Anyone identified as having prediabetes is invited to attend the free class by Sheena Carswell and Marge Morris.

Attendees will learn how to manage prediabetes and help prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Need to learn CPR? Heart Safe La Plata to offer classes

Heart Safe La Plata, a local nonprofit organization, will host an adult CPR/AED class from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday.

A CPR Pro class will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. April 9. Both classes will take place at Durango Fire Protection District Station 1, 142 Sheppard Drive.
