Restaurant food safety class offered

A restaurant food safety class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

The course is for restaurant food service workers and covers the basic requirements for safe food handling. The course can fulfill requirements for Cottage Food Tier 1 producers. A class is available for non-English speakers.

Advance registration is required. The cost is $35 per person. After successful completion of exam, attendees will receive a Food Safety Works wallet card good for one year.

Free clinic to offer Tdap vaccinations

A free clinic offering Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) vaccines will be offered to the community from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 2 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

The health department is coordinating this free clinic for adults with community partners to exercise public health emergency response.

The health department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend tetanus and pertussis vaccination for youths and adults. The Tdap booster is suggested every five years for adults to maintain pertussis immunity, while tetanus boosters are needed every 10 years.
