Group highlights cervical health

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month.

The American Cancer Society says the majority of cervical-cancer cases and deaths could be prevented with of vaccination, regular screening and treatment.

The American Cancer Society recommends the HPV vaccine be given to girls ages 11 to 12. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other groups also recommend routine vaccination for boys.

Women who receive the HPV vaccine still need to get regular screenings for cervical cancer.

The American Cancer Society recommends women ages 30 to 65 have a human papillomavirus test with their Pap test every five years as the preferred screening strategy. Women between ages 21 and 29 should have a Pap test every three years.
