Mother’s Day signals Women’s Health Week

Mother’s Day starts Women’s Health Week, and the American Cancer Society and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment urge women to schedule preventive screenings.

The department’s Women’s Wellness Connection program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. The program works in partnership with American Cancer Society to operate a statewide referral and information line.

Mercy receives cancer accreditation

The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has granted three-year accreditation to Mercy Regional Medical Center’s Cancer Program.

To earn accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.

National Women’s Checkup Day is today

National Women’s Checkup Day will take place today during National Women’s Health Week.

Women are encouraged to call and visit health-care professionals to schedule and receive checkups. San Juan Basin Health Department offers women’s services such as annual exams, STI/STD testing and treatment, birth control and immunizations. Free breast exams, pelvic exams and Pap tests and referral for free mammograms are available to qualifying women through Women’s Wellness Connection.

Gentle yoga classes available

A gentle yoga class with Jennifer Kiel, a certified yoga instructor, is held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 East Third Ave.

The class is designed for seniors and people new to yoga. Drop-ins and beginners are welcome. Classes will not be held on May 23 and 27.

Healthy communities coalition to meet

The next Celebrating Healthy Communities Coalition meeting will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield.

The coalition will begin a new campaign called “They Are Listening,” which encourages parents and other role models to talk with teenagers about alcohol and other drugs. La Plata County youths are three times less likely to drink alcohol if they know their parents disapprove.

Student immunizations available at DHS

The final opportunity this school year for Durango High School students to get shots through a special program, including ones they may need for college or summer camp, will be 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the DHS Health Center.

San Juan Basin Health has partnered with the DHS Student Health Center in providing immunizations to students.

The partnership offers low-cost immunizations and convenience for students to get immunizations at their school. Registration forms are available from the Student Health Center or on the Durango School District 9-R website.
