Women’s Health Week begins Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day kicks off Women’s Health Week, which takes place from May 11 to 17.
The American Cancer Society joins the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment in encouraging women to schedule preventive screenings during this week.
The department’s Women’s Wellness Connection program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. The program works in partnership with the American Cancer Society to operate a statewide referral and information line.

Natural Medicine Series to be held
A Natural Medicine Series will take place from 5:45 to 7 p.m. today at the Durango Public Library, 1900 Eat Third Ave.
Dr. Nicola St. Mary will offer a lecture called “Regulating Inflammation Naturally.”
This event is free and open to the public. Handouts and food samples will be provided.

Role-model award winners announced
The Celebrating Healthy Communities Coalition, supported by San Juan Basin Health announces the winners of the third-annual La Plata County Adult Role Model Awards.
Youth were asked to nominate adults 21 and older who inspire responsible, positive behavior in young people. More than 200 adults were nominated from Bayfield, Durango, Ignacio and Latino and Native American communities. All winners will be recognized with an asset-champion proclamation at the these meetings:
The Durango, Latino and Native American winners will be recognized at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango City Council meeting.
The Ignacio winner will be recognized at 7 p.m. May 13 at the Ignacio Town Board meeting.
The 2014 Adult Role Model Award winners are:
Bayfield: Paloma Morales, nominated by A.J. Swenk.
Durango: John Hise, nominated by Chamisa Shandiin Edd, Maya Reherman and Mercedez Farley.
Ignacio: Daven Reinhardt, nominated by multiple youth from Ignacio.
Latino: Cesar Hernandez, nominated by Jackie Hernandez.
Native American: Jandrea Fevold, nominated by Gwendolyn Jane Tsosie.
