Chef Tyler Henderson of Plate in Durango ended up chopped, but not until he made it to the final round of Sunday’s “You’ve Been Chopped” episode, dubbed “Fried Chicken Time,” on the Food Network.
Chef Tyler was done in by a raspberry sauce the judges found “too spicy.”
Diners know Henderson from his work at Plate, the conversion of the Main Event sports bar, which reopened in April.
The menu he prepares there includes fusions of international dishes including Southwest schnitzel, elk barbacoa tostada tower and Kahlua and agave pecan pie.
In an earlier round, Henderson credited “a trick he learned from his grandmother” for winning compliments for his fried okra.
Had Chef Tyler won, he said he would have used half of his $10,000 in winnings to cover moving expenses to Durango and half to pay off student loans.
Henderson is not the first Durangoan to receive some Food Network exposure.
Last year, Carver Brewing Co. Executive Chef Dave Cuntz competed on “Guy’s Grocery Games,” coming home as the winner.
