Three local high school graduates have been awarded STAR Scholarships by P.E.O., a philanthropic and educational women’s organization with almost 250,000 members in North America, including four chapters in Durango.
The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship recognizes the accomplishments of young women who have demonstrated excellence in leadership, extracurricular activities, community service, academics and potential for success.
Jenna Engelken, a Durango High School graduate, has enrolled at the University of Colorado-Boulder for environmental engineering. Her eventual goal is to establish a nonprofit organization to implement energy-efficient solutions internationally.DHS graduate Julia Petty was accepted into the honors college at University of Vermont, where she will study environmental science.Animas High School graduate Emily Vierling will study biology at Colorado College. Because of her love of dolphins and whales, her goal is to earn a doctorate in cetacean intelligence. Vierling plans to start a foundation that will fund marine research and conservation efforts and would facilitate community outreach, specifically to younger generations.
