Home runs, home wins

Make it four wins in a row for the Skyhawks.

The Fort Lewis College softball team returned home from a split in four games at Western New Mexico and picked up two wins against Chadron State at Aspen Field on the FLC campus Saturday.

FLC now is 6-0 at home this season and will look to make it 8-0 with two more games against Chadron State scheduled Sunday.

“It’s always good to get two wins,” FLC head coach Kira Zeiter said in a news release. “There are things we want to improve on (Sunday) like our jumps and bunts, but it is good to be back on our field in the nice weather and continue to play hard.”

FLC (10-11, 8-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) received big contributions from Jeovanna Rios, who had four hits – two homers – six runs batted in and four runs scored in FLC’s 5-2 and 8-4 wins Saturday.

The Chadron State Eagles hit back-to-back solo homers in the top of the second inning of Game 1, but Rios answered with a double to center field and later scored on a Mandy Owens double.

FLC scored three runs in the bottom of the third. With two runners in scoring position, Myndee Thompson singled to plate Missy Fundora and Adriana Rosthenhausler. Rios then hit a two-run homer.

Victoria Johnson (6-4) picked up the win in the pitching circle in the first game. She allowed five hits and struck out three.

Kiley Raica (4-5) picked up the win in Game 2, striking out five in seven innings. She earned two of the runs that scored in the game and gave up nine hits.

FLC started fast in the second game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. A Rios single scored Fundora, and Tristen Gilbert followed with a two-run single to center field.

FLC scored four more runs in the second inning. Fundora had an RBI-single to score Kaitlyn Bending, and Rios hit her second home run of the day – a three-run shot – and fifth of the season.
