Behind a breakout night from Macee Schulz, the Bayfield High School volleyball team rolled to a strong home win Tuesday in front of a whiteout crowd during homecoming week.
The Wolverines (10-4, 5-2 3A Intermountain League) worked their way past Pagosa Springs (4-10, 1-5 IML) for a 3-1 win, 25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 25-9.
BHS head coach Terene Foutz was thrilled with the play of Schulz, who had seven kills, three solo blocks, three assisted blocks and two aces.
“Three of the four sets tonight, Schulz had zero attack errors,” Foutz said. “Great efficiency effort.”
The junior said that Bayfield had high energy levels throughout the match, which helped propel the Wolverines to a win.
“I think the big thing for us tonight was keeping our energy up,” Schulz said. “Because when the whole bench is cheering it really pumps up the whole team, makes everybody want to hit their hardest and do their best.”
Meghan Youngblood had a double-double for Bayfield with 20 assists and 13 digs. Mavis Edwards also had a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Lana McKee led the defensive dominance of Bayfield with 23 digs.
As a team, the Wolverines had 13 blocks, with Schulz playing a big role in the middle.
This weekend, Bayfield will head to Montezuma-Cortez to face Centauri and the host Panthers in a league triangular event. BHS will look to avenge a 3-1 loss at Centauri last Saturday. BHS already owns a 3-0 win against Montezuma-Cortez this season.
