Ignacio boys cruise to win over Norwood

Bobcats still undefeated in league

The Ignacio High School boys basketball team is hitting on all cylinders after another easy 58-42 win over the Norwood Mavericks.

Ignacio (15-2, 10-0 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) never trailed, as Norwood (11-8, 5-6 SJBL) didn’t have an answer for Wyatt Hayes and Tucker Ward. In fact, Ignacio had four players score in double figures.

Hayes finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and seven steals. Ward had 16 points, and both Anthony Manzanares and Kruz Pardo had 11.

“We did pretty good, the lead was never in jeopardy,” Ignacio head coach Chris Valdez said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “I think we’re getting ready for (the postseason). We must clean up some stuff in districts.”

Ignacio started the game up 30-17 at halftime and went up 20 points by the time the fourth quarter rolled around. Valdez pulled all of his starters by the end of the game.

The Bobcats were in action Tuesday night against Monticello of Utah. Ignacio pulled out the comeback victory, 49-45, as the it came back from nine points down in the fourth quarter.

“We can see our seniors starting step up in a big game,” Valdez said. “It was a really quality win for us.”

Ignacio will end its regular season at 5 p.m. Saturday against Telluride for senior night.
