Ignacio football falls in overtime to Center

Vikings find final TD

Ignacio had two chances to win on a field goal, but it wasn’t enough Friday at home against Center.

The Ignacio High School football team fell 12-6 in overtime to the Center Vikings on Friday in Ignacio. After the Bobcats missed a field goal on the first possession of overtime, Center needed only three plays to win the game, as a 2-yard touchdown run by Cosme Cordova won the game.

Ignacio (2-4, 0-1 1A Southern Peaks League) scored the game’s first touchdown, but it didn’t come until the third quarter, as both teams worked to control the ball and the clock in the first half.

Ignacio’s Lawrence Toledo ended the stalemate on a 4-yard touchdown run with 7 minutes, 54 seconds to go in the third quarter. The seven-play drive was set up by a fumble recovery by Ignacio’s Lucas Roderick on the first play of the third quarter. Ignacio missed the extra point, and the Bobcats led 6-0.

Only 36 seconds later, the Vikings (4-2, 1-0 SPL) answered with a quick two-play drive that spanned 57 yards. Devin Porres ran for a 39-yard touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed, and the game was tied 6-6 until overtime.

IHS had a chance to win in regulation. An interception by Shawn Campbell was returned deep into Center territory, and a personal foul on the Vikings gave IHS the ball on the Center 9-yard line with 1:10 to play. With 5 seconds to play, Ignacio called timeout and set up a 25-yard field goal for Mike Archuleta, but the kick missed left to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Archuleta has a shot at a 26-yard field goal, and it also went left.

The Bobcats will hit the road to play next Friday at Monte Vista before a return trip home the following week to host Dolores on homecoming night.
