High School volleyball teams from La Plata County competed in the regional round of their respective state tournaments over the weekend.
Ignacio was the first team to compete in the Class 2A Region VI championships on Friday in Edwards at Vail Christian High School. The Volleycats entered the tournament as the No. 31 seed, but played really well and challenged for the regional title.
In Ignacio’s first game against No. 6 Vail Christian, VCHS took the first set 25-19, but Ignacio responded and won the second set 25-19 to tie the match. The next two sets were close, but Vail escaped with 25-23, 25-23 wins to avoid the upset.
Ignacio then took on No. 19 Lake County High School. IHS won the first set, 25-19, but Lake County took the second set 25-17 to tie it. The Volleycats, however, were able to put the match away with a 25-22 and 25-11 wins.
In the day’s final match, Ignacio needed Lake County to upset Vail Christian to make it a three-way tie and give them a shot at reaching state via tiebreakers. VCHS, however, swept Lake County 25-13, 25-17 and 25-8 to advance to the Class 2A state tournament.
Durango and Bayfield, meanwhile, will compete on Saturday.
In the Class 4A Region VI championship at Green Mountain High School in Lakewood, No. 19 Durango is scheduled to play No. 31 Battle Mountain and No. 6 Green Mountain.
In Class 3A’s Region VI championships in Greeley, Bayfield will play No. 31 Rifle first and No. 6 University, the defending state champs, for a spot in the state tournament.
