Ignacio wins Kirtland Tournament

Bobcats start the season 3-0 with a tournament championship

Ignacio started its boys basketball season 3-0 with a tournament title.

Ignacio High School beat Kirtland Central 57-52 on Saturday to win the Kirtland Tournament, and the Bobcats got results from several players, including an all-around defensive/offensive showcase from Adison Jones.

“I’d give him the MVP if I could,” IHS head coach Chris Valdez said.

Instead, that honor went to Clayton Jefferson, “who played the game of the tournament” on Saturday, Valdez said.

Jefferson scored 18 points and was the Bobcats’ catalyst on offense.

Wyatt Hayes joined Jefferson on the all-tournament team with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals in the championship game.

Jones had 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists, all while filling the defensive assignment against Christian Mackey.

Mackey, the Broncos’ 6-5, 260-pound post who had 19 points and eight rebounds in a victory Tuesday at Durango High School, scored 21 points against the Bobcats.

“He’s the best player we’ve seen,” Valdez said.

And Jones “kept him off the boards,” Valdez said. “He did a tremendous job. He just had a solid all-around game, and he’s becoming one of our best players.”

Ignacio led by as many as 11 in the second half, and the Bobcats had an opportunity to extend their lead to 11 late in the game, but they missed an open layup. Kirtland Central converted an and-one on the other end of the floor that instead cut the lead to six.

Ignacio held on, and against a player and a team of that “caliber, that makes us feel good,” Valdez said.
