Investigation into cause of Beulah wildfire wrapping up

BEULAH, Colo. — Authorities say they’re close to wrapping up their investigation into what caused the wildfire that’s forced the evacuation of hundreds of people near the town of Beulah in southern Colorado.

Sheriff Kirk Taylor declined to say Wednesday whether the fire was caused by weather or people, saying all the findings would be announced at the same time.

The fire has destroyed eight homes since starting Monday but none have been lost in the last day. Firefighters were getting help from helicopters and air tankers for a second consecutive day on Wednesday.

Some homes are still considered threatened, and there’s no estimate yet for when residents will be allowed back home.

Better mapping has put the size of the fire at about seven square miles, down from eight.
