‘Irish Car Bomb’ firkin to return Friday at Steamworks

Herald Staff Report

Steamworks Brewing Co. plans to continue its ongoing Firkin Fridays series by reprising the tapping of its “Irish Car Bomb” firkin at 3 p.m. Friday at its downtown brewpub and Purgy’s at Purgatory Resort.

“We’re to the point we can’t consider anything else for the March Firkin due to its popularity,” said Steamworks Head Brewer Ken Martin in a news release, referencing the recipe originally created in 2011 with a nod toward St. Patrick’s Day. “It’s our only regularly reoccurring firkin. We haven’t changed the recipe, and everyone looks forward to it this time of year.”

The Irish Car Bomb is based in Steamworks’ Backside Stout, which features malt and oat flavor. The second fermentation in the firkin includes oak spirals soaked in Jameson Irish Whiskey, in addition to Irish Crème syrup and milk sugar.

A firkin is an old English unit of volume, typically a wooden cask equal to approximately one-quarter of a regular barrel, or nine-tenths of a gallon. The word “firkin” is derived from the Middle Dutch word “vierdekijn,” which means “fourth,” as in one-fourth the size. Firkin beer is unpasteurized and unfiltered, contains no preservatives and is served at cellar temperature – cool but not cold.

Steamworks, 801 East Second Ave., began its Firkin Friday series to introduce unusual, specialty craft beers to patrons and augment its regular offerings.
