It comes down to one game for BHS

Bayfield High School’s boys basketball season is down to one game to determine its state tournament fate.

After a 48-45 loss at Centauri in the regular-season finale Thursday night, the Wolverines will need to win a game in next week’s league tournament to earn a state tournament bid.

Thursday’s loss was the third by three points or fewer that the Wolverines have suffered during Intermountain League play this season. They’ve lost five games by seven points or fewer.

Bayfield shot only 28 percent (16-of-57) from the field Thursday and went 5-of-19 from behind the 3-point line.

Trevor Gabbard led the team with nine points, Taed Heydinger added eight and Ryan Phelps scored seven. Gabbard, Preston Hardy, Dillon Hoselton and Zane Phelps all had five rebounds.

BHS will go on the road Tuesday at Monte Vista in the first round of the league tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The Bayfield girls also will go on the road and play at Alamosa at 6 p.m. in the first round of its tournament.
