Judges Minot, Carlson recommended for retention

Campaigning not allowed

There won’t be any fliers, no radio or television ads, no candidates knocking on the door for several items on the November ballot: The retention of judges at the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals and 6th Judicial District Court levels.

“There are pretty strict ethical laws barring judges from campaigning,” said Kent Wagner, executive director of the Office of Judicial Performance Evaluation. “Nonpartisan commissions are charged with providing voters with fair, responsible and constructive evaluations of individual judges seeking retention and providing judges with useful information concerning their performance.”

The commissions recommended retention for all of the judges who will be on La Plata County ballots:

Supreme Court Justices Brian D. Boatright and Monica M. Marquez.

Court of Appeals Judges Terry Fox and Alan M. Loeb.

6th District Court Judge Suzanne F. Carlson.

La Plata County Court Judge Martha Tinsley Minot.

All six judges received unanimous votes from their respective commissions that they be retained.

This is Carlson’s first retention vote. She was seated on the district court bench in 2012. Minot has been the La Plata County Court judge since March 1995.
