Junction Creek Bridge damage discovered

Repair work could take four weeks

The Junction Creek Bridge on U.S. Highway 550 in the north business corridor will be repaired after crews discovered damage while working on a rehabilitation project.

Colorado Department of Transportation officials said travel on north Main Avenue near Durango High School is limited to one lane northbound and one lane southbound. The high school’s south entrance is closed to traffic, so motorists must use the 24th Street entrance.

Damage was discovered in the southbound lane on the bridge deck while crews replaced a panel of concrete above the bridge, according to a news release.

The work was done in preparation for a $6 million rehabilitation and surface treatment project on U.S. highways 550 and 160, which began March 6 and is expected to last through late May. The project boundaries are between Tech Center Drive on U.S. Highway 160 in west Durango and north Main Avenue at the Animas View Drive intersection.

The bridge is just south of the high school between 22nd and 24th streets.

Bridge repairs will take three to four weeks and will begin as soon as possible, according to CDOT.

Pedestrians are allowed to cross the bridge, but they should be mindful of the work underway.

For the ongoing road rehabilitation project, motorists can expect some Sunday and overnight closures. Work will be underway along the corridor from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Updates on the project can be found by visiting codot.gov/projects or calling 903-5745.
