Announcements

June 1-Aug. 15: Summer Reading Program: Dig Into Reading:

  • Download the Beanstack app and sign up to track reading hours. When you register, come to the library to get a free book. Every five hours you spend digging into books equals a prize from the library. Keep tracking your reading in Beanstack and color in one section of the game card per five hours you read. Stop by the library with each newly colored layer to claim your treasure.
  • Earn prizes and grand prize drawing entries at five, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 hours. (When you reach 30 hours you’ll get another book.) After that, “Read On” because you can keep earning grand prize drawing entries until you hit 60 hours.
  • Some prizes can’t be collected until July, like a second book, so keep reading all summer. All prizes must be collected on or before Aug. 15.

Hosted by Durango Poet Laureate Esther Belin, is rooted in the celebration of this region as “A Place We Call Home.” Festival will include workshops and readings from visiting poets laureate Jake Skeets (Navajo Nation), Laura Tohe (Arizona), Cristoso Apache (Colorado) and Tommy Archuleta (Santa Fe) and community members.

June 2: 6-7:30 p.m.: Book Club: “Martyr!” by Kaveh Akbar. Register at the reference desk, then join us to discuss the book at the library. A free book is available for the first 15 people who register and attend.

June 3: 4-5:30 p.m.: Teen Cookie Decorating Contest. Design and decorate three sugar cookies to be judged by your peers. Ages 13-17.

June 3 and 17: 6-7:30 p.m.: Word Honey at The Hive. Join us at the Hive (1175 Camino del Rio) for a brainstorm and poetry-writing session. All are welcome.

June 4 and 18: 5:30-6:30 p.m.: Spanish Conversation Hour. Practice Spanish in an informal setting. All levels welcome.

June 6: 11 a.m.-noon: Dig Into Reading: Adapt to Survive. Learn about biology and paleontology while discussing adaptations and design a dinosaur that can survive in the environment you imagine. Using air-dry clay and other materials, make your dream dino come to life. For ages 5-12 and their caregivers.

June 6: 1-3 p.m.: Expressive Flower Drawing. Workshop will be taught by Ann Bauer, a local artist whose background is in graphic design, photography, painting and ceramics. Registration is required.

June 8: 4:30-5:30 p.m.: Climate Support Group. A space to share thoughts and feelings about the climate crisis in community.

June 9: 10:30-11:30 a.m. and 2-3 p.m.: Terrific Tuesdays: Summer Shows. Ann Lincoln: The Underground Adventures of Dino Girl. A comedic cavewoman and her animals become prehistoric performers.

June 9: 6-8 p.m.: Maria’s Bookshop Author Event & Book Signing: Pete McBride: “Witness to Water.” Photographer and filmmaker Pete McBride sets out to document the lifeblood of the American West. What begins as an assignment transforms into a 20-year odyssey.

June 16: 6-7:30 p.m.: Book Club: Queer Writing. At Bread downtown (135 E. Eighth St.). A nontraditional book club, where the discussion is based on a genre/topic rather than a specific book. No required reading. In celebration of Pride Month, we are discussing queer writing. Registration required.

June 16: 6-7:30 p.m.: Core Survival Skills. Learn the five basic needs of a survivor. Bring questions and curiosity.

June 19: 5-7:30 p.m.: Teen After Hours: Movie Night: “Jurassic Park.” Popcorn and DIY slushies. Bring your own pillow. Ages 13-17.

June 20: 10-10:45 a.m.: Stories in the Park. Storytime and a nature-themed craft. Recommended for ages 3-7 with an adult.

June 20:11 a.m.-noon: Dig Into Reading: Dinosaur Shadow Art. Make artwork using dinosaur figures and the sun. Ages 5-12.

June 20: 1-2:30 p.m.: Acoustic Jam. Bring your voice and/or an instrument (if you play one). Share songs you know and learn new ones. Everyone is welcome. Led by local educator and folk musician Dennis Lum.

June 20: 1-3 p.m.: Silent Book Club. An hour of dedicated reading. Bring your own book or grab something new off the shelf and read alongside other readers.

June 22: 4-5:30 p.m.: Death Café. Eat cake, drink tea and discuss death. Objective is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.

June 23: 10:30-11:30 a.m. and 2-3 p.m.: Terrific Tuesdays: Summer Shows. Pint Sized Polkas. Music and magic.

June 24: 4:30-6 p.m.: Great Garden Series: A Native Lens on Gardening in the Southern Ute Community. With Cassandra Atencio and Brandi Raines.

June 24: 6:30-8 p.m.: Community Story Circle. With local author and life coach Brooke Heller. At each meeting, Brooke shares a prompt, we journal about it, then we share our stories.

June 26: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Family Movie: “The Pout-Pout Fish.” All-ages movie complete with popcorn.

June 27: 11 a.m.-noon: Dig Into Reading: Excavation Exploration. A replica excavation, extracting a dinosaur fossil from the “bedrock” in a hand-held dig site. Use special tools, practice scientific skills and leave with an artifact. Ages 5-12 and their caregivers.

June 30: 10:30-11:30 a.m. and 2-3 p.m.: Terrific Tuesdays: Summer Shows: Digeridoo Down Under. A combination of funky didgeridoo rhythms, worldly percussive beats and audience participation.

June 30: 6-7:30 p.m.: Upcycled Book Clutches. Create a zipper clutch with an upcycled book and fabric. Functional and beautiful. All materials provided. Adults and teens welcome (no children).

Highlights

Unearth a Story: June and July. Register the whole family for our all-ages Summer Learning Program, which will include special events, a storywalk, prize drawings and programs for all ages.

Friends of the Library Book & Yard Sale: Saturday, June 6, 8 a.m.-noon. In conjunction with Bayfield Yard Sale Day, the Friends will host a book sale that will also include a yard sale event in the parking lot of the library. All proceeds from the designated Friends of the Library tables benefit the library. In addition to the Friends sale, there will also be community members selling their own items in the parking lot. Contact the library to rent out a parking space for your yard sale items.

Bayfield Then & Now Postcard Challenge: Ongoing through Aug. 25. Help celebrate Colorado’s 150th birthday. Third, fourth and fifth grade students can join the re-photography challenge to capture new images of old postcards. Visit sites.google.com/view/colorado-then-now. Explore historic photos around Bayfield or La Plata County, find the location and take your own NOW photo, and upload photos before Aug. 25 for a chance to win. Bayfield entries will be displayed at the Pine River Library and at the Bayfield Heritage Days event.

Stego Storytime, Thursdays, 10-11 a.m. Dino songs, stories, crafts and games. For ages 0-6, and older siblings always welcome.

Children

Cretaceous Creations: Mondays and Wednesdays, 10-11 a.m. Create, play and discover your prehistoric side. All ages welcome. Events are created for 10 and older to do on their own and younger to complete with help.

Snack Bags for Kids: Tuesdays in June and July from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. All children (0-18) can pick up a free snack pack. Program sponsored by Pine River Shares, Friends of the Library and local churches. Hosted by Bayfield students.

Teens (grades 6-12)

Teen Gaming, Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m. From intense board game battles to console showdowns and digital worlds like Roblox, Minecraft and more.

Teen Movies & Mayhem, Thursdays, 1-3 p.m. Games, VR and snacks.

Teen D&D, Fridays, 1-3 p.m. New members welcome, no experience necessary, but you will need to set up a character before you can join our ongoing campaign. Reach out to sera@prlibrary.org to register for the group.

Weekly programs

Traditional Chen Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan): Sundays, 3-4 p.m. and Wednesdays, 9:15-10:15 a.m. Explore the benefits of Traditional Chen Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan), delivered through the lens and toolset of Applied Neuroscience. Instructor Jason Brown. Classes are free, but donations welcome.

Mountaintop Movement Full Body Fit Classes: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-9 a.m. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras. All ages and fitness levels. Classes free, although donations are always welcome. Weather permitting, classes may be held outside. Hosted by local fitness instructor Tammy Williams.

Sound Bath: Release, Restore & Rise: Tuesdays beginning June 9, 9:30-10:30 a.m. and Sundays, June 14 and 28, 6-7 p.m. Designed to soothe your body, clear your energy and uplift your spirit. You’ll be immersed in the soothing tones of alchemy crystal bowls and other harmonic instruments. The resonant frequencies work on a cellular level to calm the nervous system, release stagnant energy and promote a sense of well-being. Bring a yoga mat, blanket or anything else for comfort. Extra mats, blankets and eye pillows available. Classes are free, but donations welcome. Michelle Bishop is a sound healing practitioner and the owner of Zenergy – Breathwork and Sound Healing.

Friends of the Library Shed Book Sale: Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m. Weather permitting, stop by the shed in the library parking lot for weekly popup book sale.

NEW! Pilates with Carly: Thursdays, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Goal is to leave the class feeling longer, more aware and a little lighter ... the soreness will set in later!

Program calendar

June 1 and 2, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.: Babysitter Training. Two-day training course trains teens (12-18 years old) on basic child care, nutrition and an introductory understanding of early learning and social-emotional literacy skills. Training also features a full-day basic lifesaving course including CPR/First Aid training, allowing teens to receive an official certification from the American Heart Association. All certified teens may become part of the library’s babysitter referral list, which helps match local teens with families looking for child care. If space allows, alumni students can re-cert their CPR/First Aid certifications. Course fee is $30 and must be paid before the class. The cost for recertification is $20. June 1, 6-8 p.m.: Typeset Writers’ Group. Each month, a member of the group will bring an article for discussion. Participants also have the option to bring two pages of their own writing to read aloud, but it’s not required. To read your own writing, bring it in manuscript format.

June 2, 5:30-6:30 p.m.: After Hours Lit. A romance book club with a dark side. We alternate between cozy, feel good reads and steamy, darker romances. June’s read is “Twisted Love,” by Ana Huang, but we’ll also discuss May’s book, “The Spellshop.”

June 3, 10 a.m.: Delayed Library Opening. Monthly staff meeting. We will open at 10 a.m.

June 4, noon-1 p.m.: Ancestry Library Edition 101: Unearth Your Family’s Story. Learn how to use our new genealogical research tool. Ancestry Library Edition supplements our new local history corner by giving you onsite access to census data, vital records, immigration and military records. Staff members Rachel and Joanna will show you what it can help you do, as well as suggest ways you can take the information you obtain at the library and send it to yourself so that you can re-create your family tree at home.

June 12 and 26, 3-4:30 p.m.: Beginning Mahjong Meetup. Mahjong is a tile-based table-top game developed in 19th century China. All are welcome.
