Thursdays 10:30-11 a.m.: Family Storytime. Stories, songs, rhymes and other fun activities perfect for children ages 0-5 and their parents and caregivers.

Fridays 10:30-11 a.m.: Baby Storytime. A lapsit storytime for infants-18 months. Music, stories, fingerplays, counting rhymes and playtime. Babies should bring their parents or caregivers.

June 6, 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.: Summer Reading Show: Steve Weeks. A special Summer Reading Program show. Steve Weeks will present an interactive romp filled with music, humor and games. Free and open to the public.

June 7, 2-3:30 p.m.: SummerTeen Zone: Yoga & Mandalas. A yoga class just for teens with Brooke Lederer and also make a mandala.

June 7, 5-6 p.m.: Yoga for Adults. This free class led by Brooke Lederer of Mountain Brooke Wellness. Bring your own equipment; some supplies will be provided.

June 8, 3-5 p.m.: Summer Chess Club. Drop-in chess games for ages 7-15. All skill levels are welcome. Bring your own set or use one of ours.

June 9, 2-3 p.m.: Together We Create. Make percussion instruments from upcycled materials and then join together for some music making.

June 9, 6-7:30 p.m.: Teen night: BFF Night. Bring your BFF for a fun night at the library after-hours – or make a new BFF. There will be a trivia contest, karaoke, Switch games, board games and you can make a friendship bracelet. For teens going into grades 6-12. Registration required.

June 13, 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.: Summer Reading Show: Mysto Magic Show. A special Summer Reading Program performance. There will be magic, laughter and fun with Durango’s very own magician.

June 14, 2-3:30 p.m.: SummerTeen Zone: Kindness Rocks. Help create a set of rocks painted with messages of kindness to leave around the library or take to neighborhood parks.

June 14, 4:30-6 p.m.: Great Garden Series: Thinking like Nature to Help Regenerate Earth and Ourselves. Explore how regenerating local ecosystems positively impacts planetary and human health. Presented by Mandy Magill.

June 20, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: “All Together Now” Collaborative Art Party. Create art pieces with other kids in the community.

June 20, 5-6 p.m.: Zine Workshop. This workshop will guide participants (teens and adults) in making their own small-batch, self-published, creative magazine.

June 21, 2-3:30 p.m.: SummerTeen Zone: Wreck-It Journals and Happy Jars. Make a wreck-it journal where you can let it all out and then create a happy jar to lift your spirits.

June 21, 5-6:30 p.m.: “Island of Sea Women” Book Club No. 1. We’re celebrating our literary festival with “Island of Sea Woman,” by Lisa See. Discuss the book, then come back on June 29 to meet the author. Registration required.

June 23, 2-3 p.m.: Together We Grow. Garden yoga, planting a community patio garden, and painting cardboard trees to create a collective forest. Made possible through partnership with La Plata Family Centers Coalition.

June 23, 3-5 p.m.: Typewriter Pop Up. National Typewriter Day is June 23 and we’re using the day to celebrate the written word and our Literary Festival. Local artist, visual practitioner and award-winning author Heather Martinez will have free samples of her typewritten work and will be create small typewritten pieces.

June 23, 5-6:30 p.m.: Page One Writing Contest Reception. Browse the exhibit of more than 100 pages that were entered into the contest and vote for your favorite. Food and refreshments provided.

June 27, 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.: Summer Reading Show: Luke Renner. Entertainment on a string with the New Mexico Yo-Yo Slinger.

June 27, 6-7:30 p.m.: Bears Ears Book Talk by Andrew Gulliford. An exploration of the human and environmental history of Bears Ears National Monument and its vast cultural landscape with Andrew Gulliford, professor of history at Fort Lewis College. Registration required.

June 28, 2-3:30 p.m.: SummerTeen Zone: Help Homeless Pets. June is National Adopt-a-Cat Month, so make a no-sew blanket to donate to a cat at the La Plata County Humane Society. You can also make fleece cat toys to take home and donate as well.

June 28, 6-7:30 p.m.: Word Honey Open Mic Poetry. A night of open mic poetry. Be brave and read and original work or support and enjoy local artists.

June 29, 4:30-5:30 p.m.: Great Garden Series: Literary Garden Dedication. Join the Botanic Gardens Board of Directors and its members in a celebration of the Literary Garden.

June 29, 5:30-7 p.m.: Lisa See Literary Reception. Join us for a wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres reception before Lisa See’s keynote presentation. Free and open to all.

June 29, 7-9 p.m.: Lisa See Literary Festival Keynote Speech. See is the best-selling author of “The Island of the Sea Women,” “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” “Shanghai Girls” and more. This is a ticketed event. Tickets are free and will be available at the library on June 1. (Limit two tickets per person.)

June 30, 2-3 p.m.: Let’s Build Together. Lego Club. Build, create and play with the library’s Lego collection.

June 30, 6-7:30 p.m.: Poetry Reading with Bobby LeFebre, poet laureate of Colorado. LeFebre is an award-winning writer, performer and cultural worker fusing a nontraditional multihyphenated professional identity to imagine new realities, empower communities, advance arts and culture, and serve as an agent of provocation, transformation, equity and social change.

Bee Kind Summer Learning Program

A kindness-themed Summer Learning Program that runs in June and July and will feature live animal visits, weekly programs for all ages, and two outdoor movies. There will be storytimes for the youngest participants, twice weekly STEAM programs for kids and weekly activities for teens. Adult events include a beginning fly fishing class, kitten yoga, pottery fairy house making and more. And there will be prizes. Participants will get an entry to the weekly drawings for every activity they complete, including attending a program, committing an act of kindness, completing the StoryWalk and reading a book.

The library will host a kickoff sign-up event June 3 in the library parking lot in conjunction with the Friends of the Library Yard and Book Sale. Sign up your family and enjoy coffee and doughnuts, plus face-painting, for free. The face-painting will be from 10 a.m.-noon, but the whole event will run from 8 a.m.-noon. Free snack packs from Pine River Shares. All children can pick up a free snack pack at the library park from Pine River Shares every Tuesday from June 6-Aug. 8 (except July 4).

Kids Programs

For the youngest patrons

Thursdays, 11-11:30 a.m.: Bumble Bees Story Buzz. Storytime and craft, then stay after to play and meet other families. All ages welcome. This program will be held in the library park, weather permitting.

For elementary ages

Wednesdays and Fridays, 11 a.m.-noon: Special activities. Tie-dying, animal visits, honey tasting, and a rock swap. Open to all, but younger children will need assistance with projects. This is a drop-in event and participants may come and go as they please – no registration required. To be held in the library park or garden, weather permitting.

Teen Programs

Tuesdays, 1-2 p.m.: Teen Time. Crafts, movies, outdoor games and more.

June 10 and 24, 1-3 p.m.: Teen D&D. For all teens 13 and older. No experience necessary. Snacks provided.

All Ages Events

June 9, 11 a.m.-noon: Reptile Day. Hang out with our library snake Asmo, his friend Salazar the boa, plus their pal Nitro the tortoise.

June 16, 11 a.m.-noon: Goats. Meet Nubian goats. Floppy-eared Nubians are best known as a dairy breed. They are good for many things, such as ground clearing, packing gear, eating and milking.

June 30, sunset: Outdoor Movie, “A Bug’s Life.” Free outdoor showing of the 1998 Pixar classic “A Bug’s Life.” Bring your own blanket or chair.

Weekly Programs

Mondays and Wednesdays, 9-10 a.m.: Yoga for all. Combines the cool stillness of yin yoga and heat and flow of movement to create a balance that can be modified to work for every body. All you need is a yoga mat and a water bottle. Some yoga tools such as blocks, a blanket and a strap are encouraged. These classes are on a donation basis. Mountain Top Movement Fitness Classes

These classes are hosted by local fitness instructors Brian and Tammy Williams. Follow them on the Mountaintop Movement Facebook page for more information.

Full Body Fit Class: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-8:50 a.m.: Work out using your own body weight or light hand weights to work all the body parts. The free classes are always similar in style but always different moves. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels.

Community Knitting and Crochet Group

Sundays, 2-4 p.m.: All are welcome. Whether you have been knitting and/or crocheting for years or you would like to learn, we will do our best to help you get started.

Adult Programs

June 1, 4-6 p.m.: Matt Salka will hold in-person office hours. Members of the public are invited to meet with Salka to discuss county issues of interest or concern. For more information, call 382-6219.

June 3, 8 a.m.-noon: Friends of the Library Book and Garage Sale. The Friends of the Pine River have sorted through stacks of books to sell their best picks. In conjunction with Bayfield Yard Sale Day, the Friends will be hosting a book sale and yard sale event in the parking lot of the library. All proceeds benefit the library. Nurses from Mercy Hospital will also be at this event doing blood pressure screenings and outreach education on blood pressure, heart healthy diets, and sleep hygiene.

June 5, 10-11 a.m.: Rambling Readers. Meet at the gate to Saul’s Creek just off Highway 160 in Bayfield to walk and talk books. Call the library at 884-2222, ext. 1, for directions.

June 5, 6-8 p.m.: Typeset Writers’ Group. No rules, just writing. Each month a member of the group will bring an article for discussion. Participants also have the option to bring two pages of their own writing to read aloud, but it’s not required. If you’d like to read your own writing, bring it in manuscript format.

June 10, noon-1 p.m.: Kitten Yoga. Bayfield Yoga Instructor Colleen Theobald will be hosting a special yoga class with the La Plata County Humane Society kitten. Beginner friendly. As the room can only accommodate 20 people, this class is sure to fill up fast. To reserve a spot, call or drop by the library (884-2222, ext. 1). Suggested donation is $10-$20 per person, and all proceeds will benefit LPCHS. Checks can be made out to LPCHS. Participants msut be at least 10 years old. Participants 10-15 years old need to be accompanied by an adult. Bring a mat or blanket and a water bottle.

June 12, 4-5:30 p.m.: Five Wishes: A Living Will. A way to control something how you are treated if you get seriously ill, and choose the person you want to make health care decisions for you if you are not able to make them yourself. Follow along as we fill out this document with the guidance of hospice nurse Lola Montano.

June 13, 10-11 a.m.: Card Making at the Pine River Senior Center. Create two beautiful handmade cards. Free.

June 20 1-2:30 p.m.: Death Café. Pine River Library is one of many groups in 79 countries across the world that host Death Cafés. A Death Cafe is a time and place where people come to share food, drink tea or coffee, and discuss death openly and honestly. The aim is to increase awareness about death in order to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.

June 21, 6:15 p.m.: Regular monthly meeting of the Library's Board of Trustees.

June 22, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Spanish Conversation. Practice your Spanish in an informal setting. All ages and language levels welcome.

June 23, 11:30-12:30 p.m.: Pine River Senior Center Outreach. Enjoy books and DVDs available for check out, delivered at the Senior Center with an extended loan period (four weeks, rather than the standard one to three weeks) each month.

June 24, 10-11:30 a.m.: Fly Fishing 101. Durango’s San Juan Angler fly fishing shop is hosting a free Fly Fishing 101 class. Learn the basics of setting up a fly rod and beginner casting skills. Guides will provide all of the gear, equipment and tackle needed for the class. If you have your own rod and would like to practice with it, bring it along. Powerhouse Pass Program. Sunnyside Library and Fort Lewis Mesa Library have Powerhouse Passes available for check out at each library. The pass will allow you and your immediate family free entry to the Powerhouse Science Center. Passes can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.

Check Out State Parks Program. Fort Lewis and Sunnyside Libraries have “Check Out State Parks” backpacks available for check out. Each pack includes a pass for free entry to Colorado state parks, binoculars, wildlife viewing guides and park information. The pack can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.

Delbert Anderson Jazz Trio: Friday, June 2 at 6 p.m.: We will host Delbert Anderson and his musical group, who preserves his cultural music by creating a foundation of new Diné melodies and fusing them through jazz, jam and funk. Each path serves Indigenous culture through stories, healing, history and collaboration.

Summer Reading kickoff party: Wednesday, June 7 at 10 a.m.: Sign-up at our opening day party, we’ll have Frito pie for lunch and activities for all.

Summer Music Series: Friday, June 9 at 5:30 p.m.: Live music from local artists. To kick-off our season, we will host the bluegrass band The Badly Bent. Local food trucks and vendors will be on site along with our Friends of the Library book sale and more.

BBQ Tote Craft Making: Friday, June 16 at 2 p.m.: Make BBQ Caddies. The library will provide everything for making the totes. This is a free program, with no sign-up required.

Family Fun Night: Thursday, June 22 at 5:30 p.m.: Pachanga delicioso. Latin American cuisine, salsa music and a dance lesson. Everyone is welcome, and it’s all free. Register your family in advance at 563-9287.
