I write in support of Kim Martin’s candidacy for the Durango School District 9-R Board of Education. I am impressed with the level of expertise and experience of the current slate of candidates but believe the breadth and depth of Martin’s qualifications make her the candidate of choice. I had the pleasure of working with Martin over several years in the writing program at Fort Lewis College. What I found most impressive was her ability to set very high standards for her students and her ability to get them to strive for and reach those standards. In addition, she was a valued member of the writing faculty team and worked quite well in reviewing and improving the writing curriculum.

As a past member and former president of the 9-R board, I believe I have a good understanding of what it takes to be a productive member of that team. I am convinced that Kim Martin not only has the educational background and general qualifications to be a successful school board member but she also has a good understanding of our community and the diverse interests of La Plata County residents, which is critical in setting appropriate school policy.
