La Plata County wrestlers compete in state tournament

Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio all have wrestlers competing in Denver

There has been nonstop action with the best wrestlers in the state of Colorado battling on the mats inside Ball Arena in Denver.

The action began on Thursday. The championship quarterfinals and semifinals occurred on Friday, while the championships will occur on Saturday.

Here’s a look at how wrestlers from Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio did in each session.

Session One:

Durango’s Hana Maletich defeated Jefferson Girls’ Victoria Simental by fall in the 110-pound bracket in the first round Maletich improved to 29-10 and moved on to wrestle Sarah DeLaCerda from Abraham Lincoln girls in the quarterfinals.

Brooke Fenberg of Durango defeated Arianna Martinez from Abraham Lincoln Girls by fall in the 115-pound bracket in the first round Fenberg improved to 35-7 and moved on to face Kylee Woodard from Palmer Ridge Girls in the quarterfinals.

The Demons’ Marie Baker lost to Erin Young from Mead Girls by decision in the girls 120-pound bracket in the first round. Baker fell to 29-16 after the loss.

Durango’s Lillian Fenberg lost by fall to Samantha White from the Broomfield Girls in the first round of the 130-pound bracket. Fenberg fell to 20-13 overall after the loss.

Bayfield’s Leilani Ramos lost to Pomona Girls’ Justice Gutierrez by fall in the girls 100-pound bracket in the first round. Ramos fell to 24-7 with the loss.

Ignacio’s Lainee Bradley lost to Makenzie Krenz from Arapahoe Girls by fall in the first round in the girls 125-pound bracket. Bradley fell to 8-7 with the loss.

The Bobcats’ Larissa Espinosa won by fall over Mackenzee Steinbar from Wiggins Girls in the girls 190-pound bracket. Espinosa improved to 20-14 overall and moved on to face Madison Mckee from Arapahoe Girls in the quarterfinals.

Soriah Perez from Ignacio lost to Erin Lumberg from Palmer Ridge Girls by fall in the first round of the girls 235 pound bracket. Perez fell to 10-20 on the year.

On the boys side, Ignacio’s Aven Bourriague won by fall in the first round of the 106- pound 2A bracket over Meeker’s Holten Harvey. Bourriague improved to 33-5 and moved on to face Cooper Edson of Sedgwick County in the quarterfinals.

Zane Pontine from Ignacio lost his first-round matchup in the 144-pound 2A bracket against Mario Ortiz from Sedgwick County/Fleming by decision. Pontine fell to 34-11 for the year after the loss.

The Bobcat’s Lincoln deKay won by fall over Tristan Rollins from Meeker in the first round of the 150-pound 2A bracket. deKay improved to 38-1 overall after the win and moved on to face Brandon Vannest from Mancos in the quarterfinals.

Ignacio’s Kendrick Nossaman lost in the first round to Casey Midcap from Wray by fall in the 165-pound 2A bracket. Nossaman fell to 26-16 for the year after the loss.

Kyle Rima from Ignacio won by fall over Dayton Blok from Rye in round one of the 285-pound 2A bracket and improved to 28-8 for the year. Rima moved on to face Noah Leblanc from Meeker in the quarterfinals.

The Bayfield boys had a rough showing. Connor Martindale lost in the first round of the 106-pound 3A bracket to Jeremiah DeLaCerda of Alamosa by major decision. Martindale fell to 15-12 on the season.

Hunter Mars lost to Carlos Corral from Valley by major decision in the 113-pound 3A bracket. Mars fell to 23-13 for the year.

Bayfield’s Keaton Pickering took a surprising defeat in the first round by decision in the 126-pound 3A bracket to Logan Vannest from Platte Valley. Pickering fell to 31-3 on the year after the loss.

Logan Valencia fell in the first round of the 132-pound 3A bracket to Nick Dardanes from Brush by fall. Valencia fell to 21-12 on the year.

Session Two:

Durango’s Ryan Dugan won his first-round match in the 120-pound 4A bracket by fall over Nikolas Carrillo from Frederick. Dugan improved to 50-3 overall and went on to face Dj Snider of Sand Creek in the quarterfinals.

Riley Belt also secured a first-round win for the Demons by decision in the 138-pound 4A bracket over Donte Roane from Mesa Ridge. Belt improved to 34-5 overall and moved on to face Otto Black from Mead in the quarterfinals.

At 150 pounds, Durango’s Cole Pontine lost in the first round of the 4A bracket by fall to Kellen Engelhardt from Thompson Valley. Pontine fell to 20-11 on the year after the loss.

The Demons’ Braxton Waddell lost by decision in the first round of the 165-pound 4A bracket to Achilles Evans from Sand Creek. Waddell fell to 34-16 with the loss.

Session Three:

In the quarterfinals on Friday, Ignacio’s Larissa Espinosa lost to Madison Mckee from Arapahoe Girls in the girls 190-pound bracket. Espinosa fell to 20-15 overall.

Durango’s Hana Maletich lost to top-seeded Sarah DeLaCerda from Alamosa Girls by fall in the girls 110-pound bracket in the quarterfinals. Maletich fell to 28-11 overall.

The Demons’ Brooke Fenberg beat Palmer Ridge Girls’ Kylee Woodard by fall in the quarterfinals of the girls 115-pound bracket. Fenberg improved to 36-7 and moved on to face Lindsey Lopez from Loveland Girls in the semifinal.

On the boys side, Ignacio performed well in the quarterfinals.

The Bobcats’ Aven Bourriague beat Cooper Edson from Sedgwick County/Fleming by major decision in the quarterfinals of the 106-pound 2A bracket. Bourriague improved to 34-5 and went on to face Miguel Franco from Dolores Huerta Preparatory in the semifinals.

Ignacio’s Lincoln deKay beat Brandon Vannest from Mancos by sudden victory in the 150-pound 2A quarterfinals. deKay improved to 39-1 and went on to face Tripp DuVall from Holly in the semifinals.

Kyle Rima lost in the quarterfinals to Noah Leblanc from Meeker by fall in the 285-pound 2A bracket. Rima fell to 28-9 overall.

Ryan Dugan was the lone Demon to advance to the semifinals. Dugan won by fall over Dj Snider from Sand Creek in the quarterfinals of the 120-pound 4A bracket. Dugan improved to 51-3 and went on to face Robert Joseph Meza II from Falcon in the semifinals.

Riley Belt was defeated by tech fall by undefeated Otto Black from Mead in the quarterfinals of the 138-pound 4A bracket. Belt fell to 34-6 with the loss.

Session Four:

In the semifinals of the 115-pound girls bracket, Durango’s Brooke Fenberg lost to Lindesy Lopez of Loveland Girls by decision. Fenberg fell to 36-8 overall after the loss.

Ignacio’s Aven Bourriague’s great state tournament run came to an end when he lost to Miguel Franco from Dolores Huerta Preparatory by decision in the semifinals of the 106-pound 2A bracket. Bourriague fell to 34-6 overall.

The Bobcat’s Lincoln deKay also fell in the semifinals. Tripp DuVall beat deKay by major decision in the 150-pound 2A semifinals. deKay fell to 39-2 overall.

Durango’s Ryan Dugan also lost in the semifinals. Robert Joseph Meza II won by decision over Dugan in the 120-pound 4A semifinals. Dugan fell to 51-4 for the year after the loss.
