Lack of consistency hurts Bobcats in baseball finale

One big inning ended the 2014 Ignacio High School baseball season.

Paonia scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to beat the Bobcats 7-3 and advance in the Class 2A Western Slope League district tournament Friday in Cortez.

Bo Ward pitched the first four innings and took the loss for IHS (9-11).

Adison Jones led the Bobcats with two runs batted in, while Antonio Torres had the third.

Logan Schopp picked up the win for the Eagles by pitching six innings and striking out eight batters.

Tyler Jackson led Paonia (11-8-1) with three hits.

The Eagles advanced to play Nucla at 10 a.m. Saturday in Cortez.

“This is it for us,” IHS head coach Lupe Huerta said. “It’s consistency. We continually had issues with grades and eligibility throughout the season. We have to move kids around. It was difficult to get continuity.”
