League title eludes Lady Wolverines

Pagosa Springs plays spoiler in 0-0 draw
Bayfield's Sydney Rey (10) pursues the ball during 3A Southwestern League action Saturday at BHS. The Lady Wolverines earned a needed 1-0 win over the Mean Moose, but then tied Pagosa Springs 0-0 on the 23rd at PSHS. Survivors of a heated conflict against Alamosa three days earlier, the Bayfield Lady Wolverines traveled Tuesday to Pagosa Springs needing another win to further pressure AHS in the 3A Southwestern League’s 2024 championship chase.

But just like any number of matches in years past, Golden Peaks Stadium wasn’t to be the site of a BHS celebration.

Even though the guests didn’t lose the match, a tie cost them their shot at the crown.

Able to register one goal, a 34th-minute penalty kick by junior captain Sydney Rey, in a contact-heavy 1-0 victory over the Mean Moose, no Bayfield player managed to put a shot past PSHS junior goalkeeper Keira Davis.

However, neither fellow junior Elizabeth Currier, senior Lauren Monterroso, nor any Lady Pirate could better BHS goalie McKenna Noonan as the match ended in a scoreless draw.

Pagosa moved to 0-3-2 in SWL action and 4-4-2 overall and will next host Ignacio on Friday at 4 p.m. Now standing 2-1-3 in league and 5-4-3 overall, the Lady Wolverines will pause from play until visiting 2A Ridgway on the 30th.

IGNACIO IMPROVES AT AHS: Traveling to Alamosa on the 23rd with just enough uniformed players to compete, IHS fared better than in a season-opening 10-0 home loss back on March 12. But after holding the Mean Moose to one first-half goal, the Lady Bobcats’ energy wasn’t enough to stop AHS from netting four after intermission and prevailing 5-0.

Juniors Lexany Heredia and Noemi Lemus each scored once, as did sophomores Jayden Wubben and Araceli Molina, plus freshman Leah Higareda. Heredia and Wubben were each credited with two assists as junior Emily ‘Emmy’ Tibbitts spent the majority of the match in net.

After going to Pagosa Springs on Friday, Ignacio (1-9-0, 1-3-0 2A Intermountain-South) will then begin preparing for a slated league doubleheader on the 30th at Telluride, set to begin at 2 p.m.
