Today I read a vitriolic letter of hate and bigotry in your “Letters to the Editor” section regarding folks from the South, referring to us as “racist”, “stupid,” “greedy” and “traitors” (“
There are, I suspect, stupid and greedy people everywhere; possibly even in Hermosa. Racist?
Think back from the time of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. where racial problems have erupted in violence. Are Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore below the Mason-Dixon line?
Further back, did you know that Union troops used the whip and lash against “freed” slaves because those “freed” slaves wouldn’t work to the Union troops’ satisfaction? (Source: ”The War of Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies”; U.S. Government Printing Office, 1880).
Traitors? Not according to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Salmon P. Chase: “If you bring these (Confederate) leaders to trial it will condemn the North, for by the Constitution, secession is not rebellion.”
Racism is a national problem. It won’t be solved by false accusations against the entire population of one section of the country. Nor will it be solved by tearing down monuments and banning flags.
