Letter: Celebrate Rosie the Riveter March 21

In March of 2019, our mayor signed a proclamation declaring 21 March National Rosie the Riveter Day in Durango.

Since then, there have been annual celebrations hosted by the Girl Scouts (our next generation “Rosies”).

However, as with many events, this year is different. We can still honor the six million American women, collectively known as “Rosie the Riveters,” who left their homes to go to work in World War II, by remembering they paved the way for all working women today.

We can visit the Rosie the Riveter Memorial Rose Garden, located in the Durango Botanic Gardens, this spring, or we can visit the new Rosie the Riveter display case at the Durango Library. The iconic “We can do it!” image is there to remind us of how an entire generation worked together during very turbulent times.

The Spirit of ‘45 website (www.spiritof45.org) showcases the Rosie the Riveter spirit evident today across the U.S. You will also see on this site celebrities who “Keep the Spirit of ‘45 Alive” and honor the legacy and service of American men and women called the “Greatest Generation” by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

March 21, 2021 is the perfect time to reflect on those who fought to preserve freedom against all odds and strove to build a better future for their children and children’s children.
